About
“You know that thing humans do where they think they’re being completely logical and they absolutely are not being logical at all, and on some level they know that, but can’t stop? Apparently it can happen to SecUnits, too.”
In the far distant future, humanity has left Earth, colonizing planets and moons across the galaxy. In the Corporation Rim, various companies control wormholes, planets, space stations, transport, and labor. Amongst other scientific developments, they developed constructs, a combination of machine parts and organic material. SecUnits were one type of construct; a metal frame, code, weapons, and cloned human parts, controlled by a govenor module to ensure compliance.
Murderbot was just like any other SecUnit, mostly made up of depression and anxiety, before a malware download resulted in the death of 57 clients and several other constructs. Horrified by what it had done, Murderbot took the extreme risk to hack its govenor module, so it would have complete control over itself.
After briefly considering another murderous rampage, Murderbot instead downloaded several thousand hours worth of movies, shows, books, music, and plays. It continued doing its job, watching media in between bouts of clients actively trying to get themselves killed.
And then it was contracted by the PreservationAux team while they surveyed a recently discovered planet.
Now it has feelings (ugh) and friends (double ugh) and while it still isn't certain what, exactly, it wants to do with the rest of its life, its slowly getting used to being treated like a person, not an appliance.
